Its interesting to see how their love for baseball really ties them together. I love Nishiura's baseball team, its filled with all these interesting characters with incredibly different personalities. She can create such amazing realistic plays- the fruit of her 10 year long hard research years have definitely paid off. The baseball in this is really reasonable and like many people have already said, the mangaka DOES know her baseball. I generally don't like reading or watching sports anime/manga, simply because it tends to over-exaggerate the characters and the sport. Oofuri or Big Windup is one of the few that I believe is extremely well played. I tend to be very picky on what manga I consider well done. I can't think of a sports manga protagonist with a weaker personality than his, and this lends the series so much character. The dynamics between pitcher and catcher are another highlight. But Ookiku Furikabutte is unique and uniquely realistic in its depiction of aspects like parents' involvement in the game, self-doubt, growing up, communicating properly, and so on. Most of these share themes like hot-blooded or coldly efficient protagonists, infighting among team mates, insane amounts of training, and more. I've read (parts of) a gazillion baseball manga, including all the Adachi manga (which I adore), Major, Diamond no Ace, Last Inning, etc. What stands out to me in particular, though, is how big of a difference it is to have a female mangaka draw a sports manga. This manga deserves all the praise it gets, and I won't repeat all of it here. Won the Creative Award at 10th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2006. Won the Kodansha Manga Award for general manga in 2007. Assisted by his new teammates (and especially the catcher, Takaya Abe), he grows in stature, confidence and skill, helping his team excel with his own abilities. However, he is dragged into Nishiura's baseball team by their coach, Momoe, while watching the team training outside the field. Mihashi then transfers to Nishiura High School with plans of quitting baseball because he thinks he is not good enough to succeed at it, though he still loves the game deeply. But in truth Mihashi is really a hardworking and skillful pitcher, and the main reason why his team always lost all the games is because of bad cooperation, because his teammates never talked about the game with him, and they did not try to come up with a plan or strategy to fight against their rivals.

Mihashi graduates through middle school with extremely low self-esteem. Mihashi is thoroughly convinced that he is a lousy baseball pitcher, and feels guilty because he believes that he is responsible for all the losses. His teammates (especially the team's catcher, Hatake) hated him, and they always lost their games. Mihashi was the previous ace pitcher in his middle school's baseball team, but it seems that he only got the position because his grandfather was the owner of the school. The series, set in Saitama, follows the story of Ren Mihashi.
